OCU strives for 25th SAC title

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University competes against a field that includes three top 25-ranked teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's golf championships Monday and Tuesday at Waterchase Golf Club.

The conference tournament features ninth-ranked Oklahoma City, No. 11 Wayland Baptist (Texas), 14th-ranked Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Christian, rated 21st among the NAIA. The 54-hole event tees off with a shotgun start 8 a.m. Monday.

OCU has captured 24 SAC championships with its most recent title coming in the 2021 league tournament at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Okla. The Stars have taken the conference crown five of the past seven years. Texas Wesleyan reeled in its second SAC title led by two all-tournament golfers on April 25-26, 2022 at The Territory in Duncan, Okla.

Dylan Teeter from Oklahoma City snared last year's individual SAC championship with a 69-68-71–208, winning by one stroke. Teeter, a sophomore from Bixby, Okla., majoring in accounting, has produced a 72.50 scoring average with two top-six finishes this season.

Leandro Mihaich has topped the Stars with 71.87 strokes per round in 2022-23. Oklahoma City took eighth as all 12 teams in the tournament were ranked among the top 25 nationally.

The conference tournament returns to Waterchase Golf Club for the first time since 2016. Oklahoma City seized the conference crown in the 2016 SAC Championships by 29 shots. Waterchase Golf Club is known for tree-lined doglegs, split fairways and a cascading waterfall between the ninth and 18th greens.

The weather forecast for the area calls for a high temperature in the lower 60s with a 40 percent chance for rain Monday. Tuesday's predicted weather includes temperatures climbing to the lower 70s with a 75 percent chance of rain.
