OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University wrapped up the victory in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Tuesday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Paige Wood from OCU took the individual win by one shot. The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA women's golf, scooped up the victory by 19 strokes.
Oklahoma City hauled in its sixth win of the season. The Stars posted a 290-283–573 on the par-71, 5,833-yard course, while 23rd-ranked Texas Wesleyan carded a 293-299–592. OCU compiled the only under-par team round of the tournament at 1-under-par Tuesday. The Stars have won the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic the past four times.
OCU completed the regular season. The Stars take aim at their 18th conference title and ninth league crown in 11 years in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships on April 24-25 at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
Wood, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, studying broadcast journalism, raked in her third victory of the season and fourth of her career. Wood clinched the win by putting uphill for a birdie from 15 feet from the hole on the par-4, 364-yard 17th hole. Wood totaled a 73-67–140, sinking five birdies in the last round, finishing with seven in the tournament. Wood matched her season-best round while coming from two strokes off the pace after 18 holes.
OCU had the only two golfers in the tournament to finish under par. Maddi Kamas accumulated a 72-69–141 to snag her second runner-up finish this season. Kamas nailed four birdies on the final day to end up with eight on the tournament. Kamas, a sophomore from Kingfisher, Okla., majoring in business administration, has two wins in 2022-23.
Three Stars stood atop the individual leaderboard, and OCU had six of the top eight placers in the event. Jamie Welsh came through with her career-best finish by tying for third place with a 71-72–143. Welsh, a sophomore cell & molecular biology major from Coppell, Texas, sank five birdies, three during the last round.
MaKayla Tyrrell tied for fifth by producing a 71-73–144 for Oklahoma City. Tyrrell, a freshman from Southlake, Texas, majoring in marketing, knocked in six birdies this week. Meghan Charles came up with her best showing of the season with a seventh-place 71-74–145. Charles, a sophomore from Sand Springs, Okla., studying nursing, drained eight birdies.
OCU's Aubrey House shot a 74-72–146 to tie for eighth. House, a freshman cell & molecular biology from McAlester, Okla., had four birdies. Logan Allen contributed a 74-76–150, tying for 14th. Allen, a freshman from Las Vegas, majoring in university studies, buried an eagle on the par-5, 471-yard 16th hole in the last round to go with two birdies. Natalie Gough added a 77-74–151.
The Stars fielded a second team in the tournament. OCU's No. 2 team placed third with a 298-296–594 to finish 12 shots ahead of Bellevue (Neb.) and Redlands. That team was comprised of Charles, Welsh, House, Blaine Bruton (82-78–160) and Carrie Bowers (91-78–169).
