Stars build commanding lead in Southern Plains Intercollegiate

OCU boasts of top four individuals in field

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University created a 42-stroke cushion after one round of the Southern Plains Intercollegiate women's golf tournament Monday at Gaillardia Country Club.
Oklahoma City golfers occupied the top four spots on the individual leaderboard. The Stars' Clair Hill held a two-shot lead on teammate Arianna Medina with another 18 holes to come Tuesday.
The Stars posted a 306 on the par-72, 5,829-yard course. Southwestern (Kan.) came in second.
Hill, a senior from Gig Harbor, Wash., forged a 38-35–73 while sinking two birdies on the par-3, 108-yard 15th hole and the par-4, 314-yard 17th. Medina, a senior from Phoenix, shot a 38-37–75 with birdies on the par-5, 548-yard 14th and No. 15.
OCU's Lauren Behnken and McKenzie McCoy finished knotted for the third-place score. Behnken, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., compiled a 40-39–79 and knocked down a birdie on the par-3, 150-yard 13th hole. McCoy, a senior from Beggs, Okla., turned in a 39-40–79 with birdies on the par-5, 481-yard third hole and the par-4, 338-yard 16th.
Rachel Eckert of the Stars carded a 43-39–82, good for seventh. Eckert, a junior from Bixby, Okla., buried a birdie on No. 17.
Peyton Timmerman of Southwestern College nailed a hole-in-one on the par-3 ninth hole. Timmerman made her ace from 149 yards out using her 8-iron.
The last round of the tournament starts 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Stars take their first shots 9:40 a.m. Tuesday off the No. 1 tee.
