OCU becomes preseason SAC volleyball favorite

Stars take aim at their fifth consecutive league titles

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University occupied the No. 1 spot in the 2020-21 preseason Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball poll.
Oklahoma City collected all 10 possible first-place votes from the league's coaches and 100 points in the poll. Texas Wesleyan reeled in the other top vote. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams in the poll.
The Stars have swept the previous four SAC regular-season and tournament championships. OCU (34-4) reached the round of 16 in the NAIA Championships to equal their finest national finish in 2019.
Texas Wesleyan owned the second slot in the coaches' poll with 87 points. The Lady Rams (26-10) were the SAC's other team to reach the NAIA Championships and be included among the postseason top 25.
The conference coaches placed John Brown (Ark.) in the third spot with 82 points, while Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) held fourth in the poll at 75 points.
Wayland Baptist (Texas) owned fifth with 62 points, and Mid-America Christian finished sixth with 59 points. Panhandle State tallied 38 points for seventh place, while Southwestern Christian picked up 32 points and eighth place.
To complete the preseason SAC poll, Science & Arts of Oklahoma (27 points) took the ninth spot, Central Christian (Kan.) totaled 22 points and Langston got 21 points.
The NAIA set Saturday, Sept. 5 as the start date for regular-season competition in volleyball with the upcoming season stretching across 2020-21. John Brown and Langston have opted to forego competing in the fall. The NAIA Championship Opening Round will take place April 17 on campus sites with the NAIA Championships set for April 27-May 1 in Sioux City, Iowa.
