OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's Mark Shaw hauled in the 2019-20 Sooner Athletic Conference male athlete of the year.
League athletic directors picked Shaw for the honor. The SAC athletes of the year are based upon athletic accomplishments and contributions to his/her sport at institutional, conference and national levels for the year. Career contributions were also considered.
Science & Arts of Oklahoma pitcher Colton Williams collected the first SAC male athlete of the year acclaim ever in 2018-19. Oklahoma City swept the 2019-20 accolades with Abby Selzer reeling in the SAC female athlete of the year.
Shaw, a senior runner from Ormsby, Middlesborough, England, captured his second NAIA men's cross country individual championship in three years the previous season. Shaw swept the NAIA men's cross country athlete and scholar-athlete awards for 2019. Shaw racked up six first-place votes from the SAC athletic directors.
Shaw spearheaded the Stars to their second consecutive national championship in the NAIA Championships on Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Wash. Oklahoma City tallied 110 points to secure its fifth men's cross country national crown. OCU stood atop the NAIA ratings throughout the 2019 season, taking the top ranking for the 13th poll in a row. Oklahoma City won its 69th national championship in all sports and ran its streak of winning a national championship to 27 consecutive years. OCU accounted for the SAC's only national title of 2019-20 and the 109th national championship won by the league's member institutions in all sports.
At the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Shaw earned the 2019 national crown by completing the 8,000 meters in 24 minutes, 39.5 seconds. Shaw took the lead by the 6K mark and averaged a time of 4:58 per mile. Also during the season, Shaw finished 14th in the Chile Pepper Festival, one of the most renowned races in the nation.
For his OCU career, Shaw is a three-time national champion and five-time all-American in cross country and track & field. In track & field, Shaw became the 10,000-meter national champion in the 2019 NAIA outdoor championships. Shaw's other honors include two-time USTFCCCA athlete of the year, 2017 regional runner of the year and 2017 SAC cross country individual champion.
