Men's Track and Field Sweeps Weekly SAC Awards

Gardner, Cole recognized by SAC after Strong Showings at J.D. Martin Invitational

OKLAHOMA CITY - For the first time in 2020, the Oklahoma City University men's indoor track and field team has earned Sooner Athletic Conference weekly awards, and the Stars did it in style, sweeping the honors for the week ending Feb. 9.

Kimani Gardner and Trey Cole were named the SAC's Track and Field Athletes of the week, respectively, after each had a strong showing at the J.D. Martin Invitational. The duo each posted season best marks in their event.

Gardner, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica, actually reached NAIA qualifying standards in the 60-meter dash twice during the day. He posted an NAIA "B" standard time of 6.91 seconds in the preliminaries, and in the finals, he upped that to an "A" qualifying mark by crossing the line in 6.83 seconds. Gardner had a sixth-place finish in the field Saturday with a time that tied for seventh in the NAIA this season.

Cole, a junior from Edmond, Okla., made his season-best leap of 17 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the long jump Saturday in the J.D. Martin Invitational in Norman, Okla. The award for Cole is the first Field Athlete of the Week honor secured by the Stars since Evan Doremus won the honor on Feb. 17, 2014 for his high jump effort at the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational in Norman.

The Stars will return to action on Friday at the Pittsburg State (Kan.) Indoor Gorilla Classic. The Event will take place on Friday and Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan.
