Stars tee off in Sydney Cox Invitational

OCU comes off overwhelming win in Southern Plains Intercollegiate

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University completes its fall schedule in the Sydney Cox Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Oklahoma City's women's golf team will tee off the first hole at 10:36 a.m. Monday on the par-70, 5,856-yard East Course. The 36-hole tournament opens 8:30 a.m. each day with the tournament happening on the par-72, 5,962-yard West Course on Tuesday.
The Stars rolled to the win by 67 shots to set a program mark for margin of victory in the Southern Plains Intercollegiate on Sept. 14-15 at Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City. OCU had the top five golfers in the field as Clair Hill secured her first career individual victory.
Hill, a senior from Gig Harbor, Wash., posted a 73-74–147 to win by five strokes over teammate Arianna Medina. Hill took the Sooner Athletic Conference women's player of the week for Sept. 14-20. Hill has produced a 74.33 stroke average with top-five finishes in both tournaments this season.
Medina, a senior from Phoenix, provided the Stars with a second-place 75-77–152. OCU's Lauren Behnken had a third-place showing, McKenzie McCoy picked up fourth while Rachel Eckert came in fifth. Eckert, Hill, McCoy and Medina notched the best finishes of their college careers.
The Stars began hosting the Sydney Cox Invitational last season. Last fall, OCU captured the victory, while Lauryn Pritchard fell short in a playoff for the individual title. Cox holds membership in the NAIA Hall of Fame and the OCU Athletics Hall of Fame, becoming the first women's golfer to gain the recognition from the NAIA. Cox won the 2009 individual national championship and became a three-time NAIA all-American while contributing to four national championships for Oklahoma City from 2005-09.
Lincoln Park rates as one of Oklahoma's finest public golf courses. Oklahoma City's oldest public golf course unveiled its new state-of-the-art $9.25 million club house in spring 2015. The course was designed by Art Jackson and built in 1923. It features bent grass on the greens and Bermuda grass on the fairways.
The forecast during the tournament calls for temperatures starting in the 50s in the morning and the thermometer to rise to the lower 80s. The wind could blow between 10-20 mph.
