Susie Maxwell Berning Classic preview

#24 Women's Golf

Stars tune up for postseason in Berning Classic

OCU returns to Lincoln Park Golf Course for second of five tournaments to be held there

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University finishes the regular season in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Monday and Tuesday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
The Stars, ranked 17th in NAIA women's golf, will be among 19 institutions represented in the field, which also includes 16th-ranked William Penn (Iowa). The 36-hole event begins 8 a.m. Monday. Follow via live scoring.
Oklahoma City tees off 11 a.m. Monday on the first hole. The second round starts 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Each of the Stars will compete in the tournament either counting towards the team score or as an individual.
Melissa Eldredge paces the Stars with a 77.05 stroke average through 19 rounds. Eldredge, a junior from Eufaula, Okla., split the individual title with teammate Lauryn Pritchard in the Southwestern Christian Invitational on Sept. 17-18 at Lake Hefner Golf Course.
OCU's Natalie Gough, a freshman from Bixby, Okla., has produced a 77.32 scoring average in 19 rounds this season. OCU will recognize its only senior, Regan McQuaid, who hails from Tulsa, Okla.
The Susie Maxwell Berning Classic has been regularly a fall tournament for the Stars, but the tournament moved to the spring this season. This tournament is the second of five events OCU is playing at Lincoln Park this season.
Oklahoma City gears up for the postseason. The Sooner Athletic Conference Championships take place April 19-20, while the NAIA Championships happen May 14-17. Both tournaments occur in Oklahoma City at Lincoln Park.
Lincoln Park rates as one of Oklahoma's finest public golf courses. Oklahoma City's oldest public golf course unveiled its new state-of-the-art $9.25 million club house in spring 2015. The course was designed by Art Jackson and built in 1923. It features bent grass on the greens and Bermuda grass on the fairways.
Susie Maxwell Berning became the first woman to compete on a golf scholarship at OCU. She turned pro in 1964 and went on to capture four major LPGA championships. She entered the OCU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982.

Oklahoma City owns eight national championships won in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2017.
