This Week in OCU Men's Basketball

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University men's basketball hosts Haskell on Tuesday for this week's lone competition.
 
The Stars (5-3) and Haskell (3-9) meet in Abe Lemons Arena at 6 p.m.

Player of the Week: The Sooner Athletic Conference on Monday named Brian Alexander its Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week. Alexander aided the Stars to a perfect 2-0 conference record last week by averaging 23.0 points over the span on 52.9 percent shooting from the field. In a win over Mid-America Christian, Alexander scored 29 points while handing out five assists in the contest. Alexander added eight rebounds and 12 total assists to his stat line for the week. This is the first SAC award of the season for OCU men's basketball.
 
Stars at Home: The Stars opened the season at home on Oct. 24 and played the next seven games away from home. In that 119-70 win over Randall, the Stars got double-figure scoring from seven players: Alphonse Muteba (17), Jackson Hopps (16), Hykeem Hancock (14), Beau Tranter (13), Brian Alexander (11), Jonas Carlisle (11) and SaVaughn Smith (11). The Stars out-rebounded Randall 57-30 with Muteba and Hancock getting nine boards each.
 
Previously: Oklahoma City moved to 3-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 94-66 victory at Mid-America Christian University on Saturday. For the first time since the 2006-07 NAIA championship season, the Stars have won their first three SAC road games. Brian Alexander led the Stars with 29 points to go with five assists, five rebounds and two steals. Jonas Carlisle added a double-double, getting 23 points and 11 rebounds. Hykeem Hancock scored 14 points off the bench and SaVaughn Smith and Alphonse Muteba added 10 points each.
 
Non-Con: The Stars are 2-3 in non-conference games this season. Jonas Carlisle averages 16.4 points per game against non-conference opponents with Brian Alexander averaging 15.2 and Jackson Hopps at 11.4 points per game. The Stars average 84.6 points per game and average seven more rebounds than their non-conference opponents.
 
Scoring: Averaging 86.25 points per game, the Stars have three players scoring more than 10 points per game. Jonas Carlisle leads at 18.6, followed by Brian Alexander at 17.4 and Jackson Hopps at 10.8. Carlise is shooting 44.1 percent from three-point range and Alphonse Muteba gets 8.8 points per game with his 73.5 shooting percentage. Hopps (87 percent) and Alexander (86.4 percent) are sharpshooters from the free throw line.
 
On Board: Jonas Carlisle averages 7.8 rebounds and Alphonse Muteba average 6.3 to help OCU to a plus-seven rebounding margin. Carlisle leads the team with 24 offensive rebounds.
 
On Point: One of the preseason concerns was experience at point guard and so far, the answer is Brian Alexander. Alexander leads the team with 3.7 assists per game and has 12 steals on the season.
 
Trending: In the last three games (all wins), the Stars are averaging 91 points, allowing 70 and shooting 51 percent from the field. OCU is also shooting 43 percent from three-point range. Jonas Carlisle has made 15 of OCU's 31 three-pointers and has connected on 52 percent of those attempts. Carlisle is averaging 22.3 points per game with Brian Alexander at 21.
 
Haskell History: Haskell and OCU split a 2016-17 series with each team winning at home.
 
Scouting Haskell: Haskell is 0-8 on the road this season and 3-9 overall. Jesse White, a 6-0 junior, averages 25 points and 6.1 rebounds. Nehemiah Boykin averages 15.7 points and 6.7 rebounds and Preston Olney gets 11.9 points off the bench.
