OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City athletic department names Rachel Tapps as assistant women's basketball coach and athletic communications assistant.
Tapps breaks into athletics after spending the last four years at MId-America Christian University where she served as an admissions counselor for the University.
Tapps brings a heavy amount of experience in communications as she served as one of the official statisticians for the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships hosted by MACU on Feb. 27-28, 2023 and also served as the statistician for the NAIA Men's Basketball Opening Round first round games hosted by Langston on Mar. 7, 2023.
"I am very excited to have Rachel on board as she brings a great deal of experience as a statistician as well as being highly sufficient in the communications field" Oklahoma City Director of Athletic Communications Nate Thompson says. After working with Tapps at MACU last year Thompson is looking forward to having Rachel alongside.
During the spring and summer of 2020, Tapps served as an intern for the MACU Sports Information office, where she was tasked with website maintenance, updating student-athlete bios and upkeep of the MACU Athletics record books. Tapps served as the MACU men's and women's basketball color commentator for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
The Houston native first came to MACU in the fall of 2019 to compete for women's basketball head coach Hannah Moeller, helping lead the Evangels to a 21-11 record and a fourth-straight bid to the NCCAA National Championships. Tapps finished the season with 211 points (6.6 ppg) while leading the team in assists with 115 (3.6 apg).
Head women's basketball coach Kris Seigenthaler is very excited to bring Tapps on staff, Seigenthaler mentions, "Tapps has the intangibles to be an elite coach. She has competed inside the SAC and gets the caliber player that is going to get us back to National dominance."
Prior to coming to MACU, Tapps was the starting point guard for NCAA Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville during the 2018-19 season after competing for two seasons at NCAA Division I Texas-El Paso.
Tapps says, "I am extremely excited about the opportunity to work at a place that holds so much tradition as OCU does. I look forward to sharing my experience from a player/coach perspective. It brings me joy to inspire and empower others, especially on the court. I am most looking forward to meeting and connecting with the team as well as learning and gaining experience under Coach Seigenthaler!"
Tapps graduated from MId-America Christian in May of 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Communications and earned her master's in business administration from MACU in May of 2023.
