OKLAHOMA CITY – Nicole Tyson of OCU has been selected to coach the U17 United States National Team in Turkey Jul. 29 – Aug. 8.
After putting her name in a large pool of coaches seeking to be a part of the Team USA coaching staff, Tyson of Oklahoma City University has been selected to help lead the charge for the U17 Team USA group in Istanbul, Turkey. Since being selected Tyson has been working with Team USA in various training camps preparing for the week-long event.
Tyson is no stranger to hitting the runway and traveling overseas to coach national teams on numerous occasions throughout her coaching career. Tyson worked with Team USA coaching at the Senior Pan-American Championships in Peru along with the Cadet and JR Pan-American Championship in 2021, which originally happened to be scheduled in Brazil in 2020 and was moved to Mexico due to Covid-19. In 2019 Tyson also coached at an International Tournament in Poland and was also selected as one of the coaches for the U23 World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
An OCU alum of 2011, Tyson bolstered an outstanding wrestling career for the Stars capturing four Women's College Wrestling Association all-American awards and an individual national title. Over the course of her wrestling career at OCU, Tyson was a three-time WCWA National Finalist and helped lead the Stars to a 51-0-1 record in her career. Since taking over the OCU program in 2019 Tyson's has helped develop 14 All Americans and crowned 3 National Champions. Coming off the 2022-2023 season the Stars finished 6-3 with two All-Americans in Sophie Smith and Avery Ashley. Ashley also placed 5th at the U20 World Championships. At her career first senior level tournament Ashley placed 7th at the US Open and qualified for Senior World Team Trials. She's currently ranked 8th on the USA Olympic Ladder at 53kg. Smith, who is a two time All American, also took home the overall Jim Wade Award which is given to one male and one female recipient within the athletic department each year. Smith became the second Women's Wrestler in Tyson's tenure to receive the award.
Team USA will be competing in the World Championships August 2-4 and will be streaming live on uww.org.
