OCU women's rowing begin 2023 with one first place finish in the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta over the weekend

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City women's rowing team claimed one first place finish in the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.

Freshman Lucia Oney opened up her collegiate career in the Women's Open Lightweight 1x, finishing with a time of 20:15.3. Later in the day, Oney would switch into the role of coxswain for the men's freshman 4+ crew which took first place. Oney rounded out her Saturday performance with a second-place finish in the OGE Nightsprint Women's Open 1x 500-meter Petite Final with a time of 2:17.3 falling in behind the winner of the event from the University of Wisconsin alumnus Grace D'Souza.

Ruthie Lacy, a senior from Oklahoma City came in third in the Women's Collegiate 1x. Lacy finished with a time of 18:24.2. Lacy also competed in the Women's Open 1x 500-meter Grand Final where she won the event with a time of 1:51.8. Finally, to finish out the day for Lacy was a third-place finish in the Women's Open/Collegiate 8+ 500-meter Petitie Final coming in with a time of 1:45.4; the crew was comprised of current and former rowers. Alumni Nicole Baumann, Elizabeth Bagley, Liz Matthews, Grace Keen, Sarah Tyree and former assistant coach Melanie Borger joined Lacy, Oney and sophomore Laura Muse in the crew. 

In the doubles portion, Tristian Hill and Oney paired up to come in 10th place in the Women's Open 2x at a time of 19:54.6. In the same event Aunna Magill and Laura Muse finished 13th overall with a time of 22:02.1.

Finally in the Women's Open 2x 500-meter Grand Final Oney and Hill came in fourth place with a time of 2:09.7 while Magill and Muse finished with a time of 2:22.3 to claim sixth place.

On Sunday, the women's team teamed up with their male counterparts in the Mixed Open 4x and Mixed 8+. Lacy and Oney notched the top spot in the Mixed Open 4x finishing with a time of 16:06.7. Lacy and Oney would be joined by Hill and Muse in the Mixed Open 8+, where the crew would go on to finish in the top spot. 

Lacy started off her senior season strong, placing atop the podium in the Men's Collegiate 8+ (coxswain), Men's Collegiate 4+ (coxswain), Mixed Masters 2x, Mixed Open 4x and Mixed Open 8+ to go along with her top time in the Women's 1x at the OGE Nightsprints. 

NEXT EVENT

OCU women's rowing will make way to Cambridge, Mass and compete in the Head of the Charles on Oct. 20-22. Ruthie Lacy and Lucy Oney will be racing in the Championship 2x.
