KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City University alum Kirk Walker will be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
Walker set several career records for the Oklahoma City baseball program from 2008-11, collecting the NAIA player of the year honor in 2011.
As a senior, Walker took NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference player of the year, first-team all-American, first-team all-SAC and an NAIA gold glove award. Walker, a shortstop from Bakersfield, Calif., became a two-time all-SAC performer, two-time SAC gold glover and NAIA World Series gold glove award winner as a junior.
In his career, Walker produced OCU record numbers with 897 at-bats, 289 runs scored, 373 hits, 77 doubles and 563 total bases to go with a .416 batting average, 33 home runs, 240 RBIs and 24 steals. He led the NAIA with 30 doubles as a junior. He equaled Slade Swanner's OCU career mark with 109 walks drawn. Walker remains the program record holder in all-time runs scored, hits, RBIs, walks and total bases.
"He came in as a freshman from the get-go and was just determined to get better," OCU coach Keith Lytle said. "Of all the players we have had, I registered more progress on a weekly basis for him than anyone else. He was never content with where he was. He was working on every aspect of the game – defense, baseball IQ, everything. He had a tremendous freshman year and kept getting better from there.
"He was an absolute championship teammate. He was a soft-spoken personality, but when he spoke, people listened. I know Denney Crabaugh is in heaven smiling knowing that Kirk will be be inducted in the NAIA Hall of Fame. There's nobody more deserving that Mr. Walker getting into the Hall of Fame."
In 2011, Walker posted a .423 average with 71 runs scored, 99 hits, 24 doubles, three triples, eight homers, 72 RBIs, 16 steals and a .654 on-base percentage. Among the NAIA, he stood second in hits, fifth in doubles, sixth with 153 total bases and 1.68 hits a game, eighth in runs scored, ninth with 1.20 runs scored per game and 10th with 174 assists, 0.41 doubles a game and in RBIs. Of his 242 appearances with OCU, he made 232 starts.
Walker led the Stars to four NAIA World Series appearances, third-place World Series finishes in 2008 and '09, three NAIA Championship Opening Round crowns, regional and super regional titles, the 2010 SAC Tournament title, the 2011 SAC regular-season championship, three 50-win seasons and a 207-49 mark (.809 winning percentage). The Atlanta Braves selected Walker in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in the 26th round with the 806th overall pick.
"I could write you a book on the impact OCU had on me," Walker said. "Whether we realized it at the time or not we were all developing into better humans as well as better baseball players. You learn the value of hard work and goal setting. What it's like to be dedicated and responsible. Going to class, getting good grades and graduating. The legacy of OCU Baseball is what we all developed into, and I know that's what Denney Crabaugh and Keith Lytle are most proud of."
Oklahoma City has accumulated the most wins in college baseball since 1991 with 1,535. The Stars took the national title in 2005.
