OCU freshmen collect all-American nods in NAIA Championships

Luton, Manion give Stars eight freshmen all-Americans

PARK CITY, Kan. – Oklahoma City University's Keegan Luton and Cade Manion secured all-American honors Friday in the NAIA men's wrestling championships at Hartman Arena. 

Luton and Manion joined exclusive company as OCU freshmen who have become all-Americans. Eight Stars have earned all-American status as freshmen, while seven have taken all-American acclaim as true freshmen. 

The tournament resumes 10 a.m. Saturday with championship semifinals and consolation rounds then all-American placing matches. The championship finals will be held 7 p.m. Saturday. 

Manion, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., has gone undefeated through three matches in the 141-pound bracket of the tournament. Manion (13-4) edged No. 2 seed Nick Henneman from Lourdes (Ohio) 6-5 before taking down 10th seed Kyle Kantola of Indiana Tech 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Manion opened the day with a pin against Nathan Berta from Calumet (Ind.) in 4:41. A semifinal matchup with Martin Wilkie of Montana State-Northern looms Saturday. 

Luton, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., owns a 3-1 mark after Friday's action. Luton remained alive in the 149-pound division with a 7-3 win over Lourdes' Blake Montrie. Denver Stonecheck from Life (Ga.) dealt Luton a 6-4 loss in sudden victory in the championship quarterfinals. Luton (28-5) started Friday with a 12-4 win against Seth Johnson of Marian (Ga.) then gutted out a 3-2 win over Salvador Silva of Southeastern (Fla.). Luton's next match will be against Southeastern's Andreus Bond. 

Oklahoma City holds 17th place with 21.5 team points scored.
