OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University had the top two individuals and four of the top 10 golfers to build a 20-shot lead through 36 holes of the Kyle Blaser Invitational on Monday at Gaillardia Country Club.
Maddi Kamas and Reagan Chaney topped the field to boost the Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA women's golf.
OCU compiled a 297-290–587 on the par-72, 6,075-yard course. Oklahoma Christian stood second with a 309-298–607, while ninth-ranked Texas Wesleyan shot 306-303–609.
Kamas posted the only under-par score of the tournament through two rounds with a 70-71–141. Kamas, a freshman from Kingfisher, Okla., built a seven-stroke advantage. Kamas knocked in eight birdies, including four on par-5 holes.
Chaney turned in a 74-74–148 to be alone in second place. Chaney, a freshman from Ardmore, Okla., made four birdies on the day.
The other Stars among the top 10 were Natalie Gough (tied for sixth) and Paige Wood (tied for eighth). Gough, a senior from Bixby, Okla., provided OCU with an 80-71–151. In round No. 2, Gough matched Kamas' low score to stand as the only competitors with under-par rounds. Gough sank two birdies, both in the latter round.
Wood, a freshman from McKinney, Texas, carded a 78-74–152. Wood converted four birdies, three in the second round. Morgan Palermo contributed a 75-79–154 to hold 13th. Palermo, a freshman from Parker, Colo., registered four birdies, all in the first round.
Oklahoma City's other golfers held spots in the top 20. Rachel Eckert, a senior from Bixby, Okla., shot a 77-79–156 to be 15th. Lauren Behnken (79-82–161) and Meghan Charles (82-79–161) were tied for 20th.
The weather in the metro area Monday included temperatures in the lower 50s at the start of the day and a high temperature of 82 degrees in the late afternoon. The wind blew around 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
The final round begins 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with tee times starting off the first and 10th holes.
