OCU vs. Panhandle State women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP

• Oklahoma City University will try to get back to its winning ways when it travels to Panhandle State on Monday night. Before losing at Wayland Baptist on Saturday, OCU had won for of its last five games.
• OCU and OPSU were scheduled to play on Jan. 3 at Abe Lemons Arena but that game was not played due to COVID protocols with the Aggies receiving a forfeit win. The Stars hold a 10-1 lead in the all-time series over OPSU with the closest margin in a win being a 75-57 win at Abe Lemons Arena on Nov. 21, 2019.
• OCU enters the game tied for sixth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 9-8 league record while OPSU stands in 11th place with a 3-14 conference mark.
 

ABOUT THE STARS 

• OCU (14-8, 9-8 SAC) fell 94-64 to No. 12 ranked Wayland Baptist on Saturday afternoon in Planview. The result snapped the Stars' two-game winning streak.
• Senior guard Erika Ankney led the Stars with 18 points in the loss.
• Ankney ranks second on the squad and eighth in the SAC in scoring (17.6 ppg) and first on the squad and fourth in the conference in assists (4.0 apg).
• Senior guard Annilia Dawn contributed 13 points against WBU, marking the 11th time in 16 games played that she has scored in double-figures.
• Senior center Abby Selzer finished with 11 points and six rebounds against WBU. She ranks second in the SAC in rebounding (10.3 rpg) and fifth in scoring (18.1 rpg).
• OCU recorded a season-low 25 rebounds in the loss.
• OCU is 11-1 in games in which it out-rebounded its opponent this season.
• OCU ranks fifth in the NAIA team rankings in free throws made per game (17.6) and eighth in free throw percentage (76.8%, 335 of 436).
• OCU ranks fifth in the SAC in team offense (74.5 ppg) and seventh in team defense (69.2 ppg).
• Oklahoma City has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and finished as national runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019) 
• The Stars took third in the preseason SAC poll. Oklahoma City owns 20 SAC regular-season titles and 12 SAC Tournament championships. Since 2007-08, OCU has gone 251-30 (.893 winning percentage) in conference play

ABOUT THE AGGIES

• Panhandle State (5-14, 3-14 SAC) enters the game having lost seven of eight games since returning from the holiday break. In their latest outing the Aggies were defeated by John Brown 78-73 on Saturday in Goodwell.
• Senior forward Cassia McCaskill led the Aggies with 28 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
• McCaskill ranks ninth in the Sooner Athletic Conference in scoring (16.7 ppg). She also ranks first in free throw percentage (89.1%) and second in 3-pointers per game (2.5) and 3-point field goal percentage (37.0%).
• Senior guard Tateum Jones ranks ninth in the conference in steals (1.9 spg).
• OPSU ranks 10th in the SAC in team offense (62.1 ppg) and ninth in team defense (71.6 ppg).

 
MEET THE COACHES

Brett Tahah (19-6, second season with OCU)
• Tahah is the first former OCU student-athlete to serve as head coach of the program
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles 

Victor Esparza (39-67, fourth season at OPSU)
• Took over the program on an interim basis for the 2017-18 season before getting the job on a permanent basis the next season.
• Also serves as OPSU's Athletics Director.
• Started his career at OPSU as an assistant women's basketball coach in 2006.
