Stars to face Evangels in SAC Tourney Quarterfinal Round

THE MATCHUP

• After defeating North Texas Dallas 69-67 in the opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena, Oklahoma City University will make the short trip to Mid-America Christian to play a quarterfinal round game on Friday night.
• OCU is the No. 7 seed in the SAC Tournament and MACU is the No. 2 seed. The Evangels are ranked No. 22 in the latest NAIA women's basketball top-25 coaches' poll.
• MACU swept OCU in the regular season between the two teams, winning 71-53 on Jan. 6 at Abe Lemons Arena and 73-69 on Feb. 10 at Gaulke Activity Center.
• OCU leads the all-time series between the teams at 30-2 

ABOUT THE STARS 

• OCU (16-12) defeated North Texas Dallas 69-67 in the opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena. There were 12 lead changes in the game with senior center Abby Selzer breaking a 67-67 tie with a game-winning lay-up with 21 seconds remaining in the contest.
• Freshman guard Elaine Witt played all 40 minutes in the win with senior guard Jordyn Eaton playing 39 minutes and junior forward Fiona Wilson logging 36 minutes.
• Selzer contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win, marking her 14th double-double of the season. She ranks second in the SAC in rebounding (10.3 rpg) and third in scoring (18.6 ppg).
• Witt made six of 12 field goal attempts and three of five 3-pointers to finish with a season-high 17 points, six rebounds and five assists in the win over UNTD. Her previous high point total was 10-point outing in an 81-76 win over Southwestern Christian on Jan. 8.
• Eaton contributed a career-high eight assists along with six rebounds and four points. Earlier this season she recorded five assists in a loss to MACU.
• Wilson finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. She has now scored in double-figures in 14 of 25 games played this season, ranking fourth on the squad with an 11.2 points per game scoring average.
• OCU recorded six blocks in the win over UNTD, tying for the second most blocks in a game this season. The Stars totaled seven team blocks in a 77-72 win over Southwestern Christian on Feb. 12.
• OCU made 13 of 15 free throw attempts in the win, marking another solid night from the charity stripe. The Stars ranks third in the NAIA team rankings in free throws made per game (17.4) and fourth in free throw percentage (78.7%).
• OCU out-rebounded UNTD 51-33 for a plus-18 margin. The Stars have out-rebounded their opponent by double-digits nine times this season.
• OCU ranks fifth in the SAC in team offense (73.2 ppg) and eighth in team defense (70.4 ppg)

ABOUT THE EVANGELS

• Mid-America Christian (26-3) enters the SAC Tournament with 18 wins in its last 19 games. The only loss during this stretch was a 75-58 road loss at John Brown (Ark.) on Feb. 12. Since that loss the Evangels have won three straight games with the closest margin of victory being a 67-48 win over Langston last Saturday.
• Grad student Ossyana Ozoani led the team with 18 points and 16 rebounds in the win over Langston, marking her 14th double-double of the season.
• Ozoani ranks first in the Sooner Athletic Conference in rebounding (10.8 rpg). She also ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage (56.7%) and 16th in scoring (12.5 ppg).
• MACU ranks third in the SAC in team offense (77.3 ppg) and first in team defense (56.8 ppg).
• MACU has only allowed 60 or more points in a game 12 times this season
 
MEET THE COACHES

Brett Tahah (21-13, second season with OCU)
• Tahah is the first former OCU student-athlete to serve as head coach of the program
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles 

Hannah Moeller (128-50, sixth season at MACU)
• Led the Evangels to their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title and NAIA National Tournament appearance last season.
• Guided the team to 20-win seasons in her first four seasons as head coach before last year's COVID-shortened campaign.
• Two-time NCCAA National Coach of the Year honoree.
