BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Tres Hill knocked off future teammate Dylan Teeter in a showdown of incoming Oklahoma City University freshmen in the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur championship 1-up on Wednesday at Cedar Ridge Country Club.
Hill overcame a three-hole deficit after 10 holes to secure the match-play tournament title on the 7,392-yard course.
Hill's chip-in birdie from right of the green on the par-4 16th hole evened the match. Hill clinched the win with a 2-putt from 20 feet below the hole.
"Both these guys are going to be really good players and help us have a chance to win national championships," OCU coach Andy Crabtree said. "The state of Oklahoma junior golf is so strong it's just amazing, and these two are a reflection of that."
Teeter built a three-hole lead by making par on the first three holes. Hill responded with birdies on Nos. 4 and 6, but Teeter sank a birdie on the ninth hole.
Hill prevailed over Austin Hannah, six-time club champion at The Oaks Country Club, 2-up in the tournament semifinals Wednesday morning. Teeter topped Abilene Christian's Jake Bay 2-up earlier Wednesday. Hill won six matches over three days to take the crown.
As a senior at Elk City, Okla., Hill took the Class 4A individual state championship by one shot May 10-12 at Winter Creek Golf & Country Club in Blanchard, Okla. Teeter finished third place in the Class 6A state tournament as a senior at Bixby, Okla., in May at Forest Ridge Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Okla.
The Stars have captured 11 national championships in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2018.
