Halter from OCU turns pro with Nationals

Stars have produced 164 professionals, 77 MLB draftees

WASHINGTON – Gunner Halter of Oklahoma City University has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Nationals.
Halter, a senior center fielder from Overland Park, Kan., becomes the 164th Oklahoma City alum to enter the professional baseball ranks. OCU has the most victories in college baseball since 1991 (1,486).
Halter collected two all-Sooner Athletic Conference honors and a conference gold glove as a Star. Halter ranked fourth in the NAIA in doubles while hitting .388 with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs. He accumulated 83 hits, 66 runs scored and 16 stolen bases this year. Halter turned in nine three-hit performances last season.
In his OCU career, Halter posted a .399 average, 21 homers, 70 RBIs, 19 steals, 123 hits, 100 runs scored, 31 doubles and two triples. Halter drove in a career-best eight RBIs with two homers at Central Christian (Kan.) on April 2.
The Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays had previously selected Halter in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Halter follows his father's footsteps in turning pro. Shane Halter played eight years in the majors with the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels and the New York Mets. Halter's uncle Frank pitched for OCU in 2000.
The Stars (36-19) ranked in the top 10 nationally as a team with a .611 slugging percentage (fourth), 2.018 homers per game (fourth), 2.473 doubles a game (fifth), 136 doubles (sixth) and a .340 batting average (eighth) last year. Oklahoma City advanced to the SAC Tournament championship game and played for the conference regular-season title on the last day of the regular season. OCU captured the 2005 national championship.
