BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University women's cross country team enters Saturday's Sooner Athletic Conference Championships with its sights set on winning its seventh straight conference title.
The 6K race will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eldon Lyon Park.
OCU enters the championship meet on the heels of a fifth-place finish amongst a talent-laden field of 25 teams at the Mid-States Classic hosted by Southwestern (Kan.). The Stars had two top-10 finishes in that race with junior
Jacinda Kwambai finishing fourth and sophomore
Sharon Koima finishing in eighth place Oct. 23 in Winfield, Kan.
Last spring, Kwambai finished second at the SAC Championships on March 27 at Woodson Park before going on to notch a ninth-place finish at the NAIA Championships. Koima was solid as well, finishing third at the SAC meet in Oklahoma City and 28th at the NAIA meet. In the SAC Championships, OCU produced six all-conference performers with three finishing in the top five and five coming in the top 10.
Despite the Stars falling out of the latest NAIA Women's Cross Country Coaches Top-25 Poll, first-year head coach Frezer has high hopes for the Stars at the conference meet.
"Our number one mission is to compete well and punch our ticket to nationals," Legesse said. "Our student-athletes have worked very hard since the summer to expect nothing less. We are very excited to get out there and race."
The NAIA Championships will be held on Nov. 9 in Vancouver, Wash.
