Wieck takes mound for first time in 2020 for Cubs

Major League Baseball opened season Thursday, July 23

CHICAGO – Brad Wieck stands as the only Oklahoma City University alum pitching professionally this year as the Major League Baseball season got under way recently.
Wieck made his 2020 debut by working the sixth inning for the Chicago Cubs against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday at Wrigley Field. Wieck, 28, suffered a hamstring strain which put him on the disabled list.
The Cubs traded for Wieck on July 31, 2019. The 6-foot-8 left-handed hurler pitched for the Cubs for the first time Sept. 1 inside the Friendly Confines in Chicago. Wieck collected his first major-league victory vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 15 in Chicago.
Wieck started the 2019 season with the San Diego Padres and pitched for the last time as a Padre on July 3. The Padres sent Wieck to the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas on July 4. When the Cubs picked up Wieck, he initially went to the Iowa Cubs. Before Wieck returned to the majors, Wieck pitched once again in Oklahoma City for Iowa against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Aug. 27.
Wieck became the seventh OCU alum to reach the majors when the Padres called him up Sept. 11, 2018. He pitched in the big leagues for the first time Sept. 14 against the Texas Rangers in San Diego. Since 2018, Wieck has made 50 big-league appearances and struck out 61 batters in 42.2 innings for the Cubs and Padres.
The New York Mets chose Wieck in the seventh round of the 2014 Major-League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In 2014, Wieck led the NAIA in strikeouts per nine innings (15.24) with the Stars. Wieck fanned 118 batters in 69.2 innings while going 5-5 with a 3.23 earned run average with Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City has produced 163 professional players with 77 selected in the MLB Draft. OCU boasts of the most victories in college baseball since 1991 (1,450). In 2020, OCU coach Denney Crabaugh notched career victory No. 1,500 in an 11-3 win over York (Neb.) on Feb. 1 at Jim Wade Stadium. Crabaugh took over the fourth spot on NAIA's all-time baseball coaching win list after boosting his career mark to 1,516-468-2 in 32 years as OCU coach.
