OKLAHOMA CITY - Freshman Eddie Smith headlined a list of four Oklahoma City University men's basketball players who were included on the All-Sooner Athletic Conference awards lists when they were released by the Conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Smith was named Co-Freshman of the Year in the Conference, and he was joined by three OCU seniors in receiving honors from the league. Trae Bryant was included on the All-SAC third team, Anthony Davis was an honorable mention All-SAC honoree, and Eric Wattree earned the Conference's Sportsmanship award.
Smith, 6-foot-2 freshman from Birmingham, Ala., poured in 245 points during his freshman campaign, appearing in 28 games and making four starts for the Stars. He averaged nearly nine points a game in only 16 minutes of action. He shot the ball at a 41.6% clip from the field, and he was even better from long distance, making 42.6% of his 3-point attempts. He reached double-figures 13 times during the season, including a season-best 18-point effort at home against Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Feb. 6.
Bryant, a 6-foot-1 senior from Wilmington, N.C., did not appear for the Stars until after Christmas, but he was a force for OCU once he rejoined the lineup. He averaged 13.1 points in 19 games played, and he scored in double figures in 15 of those 19 appearances. He made 48% of his shots from the floor, including 42.2% from long distance, and he twice scored more than 20 points in a game - on Jan. 14 against Southwestern Christian and on Feb. 29 at Panhandle State in a game OCU had to win to qualify for the postseason. He tallied 498 points in his two seasons at OCU, and he dished out 121 assists in 45 games.
Davis, a 6-foot-7 senior from Lewisville, Texas, was OCU's leading scorer on the season, averaging 13.3 points per contest in 29 games played. He had seven double-doubles during the campaign, and he scored in double figures 19 times. He had four games in which he eclipsed the 20-point mark, and he made 50.6% of his shots from the floor. Davis averaged 11.8 points per game and amassed 731 tallies in two seasons at OCU. In 62 games, he he snared 374 rebounds and swatted 33 shot attempts as well.
Wattree, a 6-foot-3 senior from Port Orchard, Wash., was selected for the sportsmanship award for the conference in a vote of the league's coaches for his conduct on the court. He scored 5.7 points per game and he appeared in 27 contests for OCU this season. He tallied a season-high 13 points in a win over Southwestern Christian on Feb. 11 on the road as he helped OCU complete the season sweep of the Eagles. Wattree scored 383 points in 60 career games at OCU, and he reeled in 158 boards, he handed out 98 assists, and he pilfered 41 steals.
OCU bowed out of the SAC tournament with an 80-65 defeat at No. 9 John Brown on Tuesday evening.
