OCU seeks first SAC women's wrestling title

Nine Stars included in last national rankings

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University will face off against four nationally ranked teams in the inaugural Sooner Athletic Conference women's wrestling championships 9 a.m. Saturday at the Laney Center.
The conference meet will feature three individuals ranked No. 1 at their weight by the NAIA. OCU brings nine ranked individuals including Rachel Watters, No. 2 at 155, and Nkechinyere Nwankwo, rated second at 191.
This is the first season the 40-plus-year-old SAC has sponsored women's wrestling. The SAC joined the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Mid-South Conference as NAIA leagues sponsoring women's wrestling.
The SAC Championships will include seventh-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas), eighth-ranked Lyon, 10th-ranked Oklahoma City, No. 18 Texas Wesleyan and No. 20 Central Methodist (Kan.). Central Christian and Missouri Baptist, which sits just outside the top 20, will round out the field. The top four placers at each weight in the SAC Championships will become all-conference performers – the champions will be first team, runner-up second team and third- and fourth-place finishers will be honorable mention.
Three Pioneers top the NAIA's individual rankings at their weights – 101-pounder Nina Pham, 136-pound Desiree Zavala and 155-pound Kaylynn Albrecht.
Oklahoma City placed fifth with one national champion and five all-Americans in the Women's College Wrestling Association Championships on Feb. 7-8 in Marietta, Ga. Texas Wesleyan took 13th with five all-Americans, and Missouri Baptist was 17th with one all-American.
Watters captured the 155-pound WCWA title and a berth in the U.S. Olympic Trials in April. Watters reeled in wrestler of the week honors from the SAC, NAIA and USA Wrestling.
Texas Wesleyan's Madison Brown earned fourth place at 101 pounds, while Aliyah Rollins of Missouri Baptist finished fifth place at 116.
SAC teams will tune up for the NAIA Invitational on March 13-14 in Jamestown, N.D. OCU finished as runner-up with nine all-Americans in the 2019 NAIA Invitational in Jamestown, N.D.
