OCU Men's Golf Second Headed into Final Round at OUAZ Invite

Stars Trim Seven Shots Off Opening Round Score in Second 18

Peri'Don Castille carded the low round of the tournament on Day one, firing a second round 67
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The Oklahoma City University men's golf team opened their 2020 spring schedule on Monday at the Ottawa University-Arizona Spring Invitational. The field included teams from 10 NAIA schools including three teams ranked in the top=15 in the most recent NAIA top-25 coaches' poll.

The Stars are currently second on the leaderboard, trailing only the host NAIA No. 4 OUAZ Spirit. OCU opened the day with a first round 300, but the Stars trimmed seven strokes off that number in the second round, firing a 293 which was paced by Peri'Don Castille's 67, which was the low round of the day in the tournament.

"We were shaking off the rust a little bit up and down the lineup," head coach Andy Crabtree said after the round, "nut this is a tournament we put on the schedule because we knew it would be a good preparation for the National Tournament which is back here in Arizona. The round from Peri'Don was outstanding, and we started to get things going as a team in the second round. We've positioned ourselves to be in contention entering the final round, which is where you want to be."

David Meyers led the Stars in round one with a birdie bonanza on the back nine at the Wigwam Gold Course. Myers overcame a slow start by notching birdies on the par-5 fourth and par-4 seventh hole, and he made the turn with a 38 on his score card. After a bogey at 11, Meyers went on a tear on the 14th, 15th, and 16th holes. He birdied each of those holes, and came home in 35 for a round total of 73. Castille and Carson Seals each shot 75 in the opening round, while Santiago Chamorro (77) and Dylan Mullaney (78) rounded out the the OCU lineup.

In the second round, Castille came out firing. The senior from Dallas birdied the first, fourth, fifth, and eighth holes without a bogey on the card, posting a 32 on the outward nine. His only bogey of the round came on the 11th hole, and he followed those up with birdies on 14 and 15 to move to 5-under par, which is where he finished with a second round 67.

The round of 67 was the lowest round from any player in the field on Monday, and it was one of only three rounds in the 60s recorded in either round. Castille sits alone in second individually entering the final 18 holes on Tuesday. His 142 through 36 holes is only one shot off the pace set by OUAZ's Mason Domecq (141). Meyers is also in the top-5 individually, sitting at 147 in fifth place. Seals is currently in a sixth place tie at 150.

The event also features Morningside College (Neb.) who is ranked 15th in the NAIA, and Arizona Christian University who is the first team receiving votes outside the top-25. The teams will commence the final round on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CST.
