KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City University's Chris Williams collected second-team NAIA Division I men's basketball all-American honors.
This season, Williams, a senior from Denver, became the conference newcomer of the year, Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament most valuable player and two-time SAC player of the week.
Williams turned in 19.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.46 steals a game while hitting 46.1 percent of his shots from the field for Oklahoma City. Williams ranked fifth in free-throw percentage (86.6 percent) and 12th in scoring (635 points) among the NAIA. Among the SAC, Williams ranked second in scoring and free-throw shooting, fourth in 3-pointers (82) and steals (48), fifth in assists (92) and 3-pointers per game (2.48), seventh in 3-point shooting (38.3 percent) and eighth in steals per game.
Williams accumulated 41 points against Southwestern Christian to equal the best scoring output this season in the SAC. His season highs include 10 rebounds vs. Southwestern Christian on Feb. 5, eight assists vs. Mid-America Christian on Jan. 29 and five steals at Randall on Nov. 20. He reeled in SAC player of the week for Nov. 5-11 and Feb. 4-10. He had 637 points, 146 rebounds, 92 assists, 48 steals and 11 blocks this season.
The Stars went 22-11, capturing the program's 10th Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship, posted their third consecutive 20-win season, won in the first round of the NAIA Championship Tournament and reached the second round of the national championship tournament for the second year in a row.
OCU advanced to the NAIA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season and 25th time overall. OCU featured six seniors on the 2018-19 team. With their help, the Stars were 67-31 with the 2017-18 SAC regular-season championship and national-tournament appearances the past three seasons.
Mark Howell, a senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, provided OCU with 7.6 points, 4.2 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals a game and a 43.4 percent shooting percentage. Howell's career highs were 18 points vs. Randall on Nov. 13, 12 assists vs. Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Jan. 19 and five steals vs. Ecclesia (Ark.) on Nov. 10, 2017.
Eric McCollum, a senior from Newburgh, N.Y., ended his OCU career with 374 points, 372 rebounds, 30 steals, 26 blocks and 21 assists. McCollum had career highs of 19 points at Southwestern Assemblies fo God on Feb. 23, 2018, 13 rebounds twice and four steals vs. USAO on Feb. 21.
Elijah Christman, a senior from Justin, Texas, finished his Stars career with 556 points, 268 rebounds, 39 assists, 39 steals and 11 blocks. Christman ranked fourth in the NAIA and led the SAC in 3-point shooting percentage this season. He achieved career highs of 29 points and made seven 3-pointers vs. Manhattan Christian on Nov. 2 and 11 rebounds against Bacone on Jan. 31. He nabbed the first SAC player of the week this season for Oct. 29-Nov. 4.
Joe Clarke, a senior from New Rochelle, N.Y., averaged 9.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Clarke turned in a season-high 25 points on Nov. 2 vs. Manhattan Christian, seven rebounds vs. Langston on Nov. 29, four assists against Bacone on Dec. 15 and four steals at Panhandle State on Feb. 14. He had 271 points, 76 rebounds, 38 assists, 35 steals and 17 blocks in his career at Oklahoma City.
Tylar Smith, a senior from Garland, Texas, played in 10 games for the Stars this season. Smith has played in 28 games in his Oklahoma City career. He was an academic all-conference and NAIA scholar-athlete honoree.
