OCU dismantles John Brown 79-33

Stars limit foe to 25 percent shooting from field for seventh time this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University trounced John Brown (Ark.) 79-33 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars harassed John Brown into a 25 percent field-goal percentage. Oklahoma City, ranked 12th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 21-2, 14-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU limited an opponent to 25 percent or worse shooting from the field for the seventh time this season. The Stars have held foes to 28.4 percent shooting from the floor for the lowest defensive field-goal percentage in the NAIA.
The Stars kept John Brown to season lows in field-goal percentage and 3-pointers (four). The Golden Eagles entered the game ranked third in the NAIA with 9.24 treys per game and sixth in 3-point shooting (36.5 percent) as a team. John Brown hit 16.7 percent from 3-point land Saturday.
John Brown managed its lowest scoring total since a 58-34 loss to Oklahoma City on March 1, 2013 in Shawnee, Okla., in the SAC Tournament. John Brown hadn't been held below 40 points since a 55-38 setback at Southwestern Christian on Jan. 14, 2016.
"I'm really impressed early in the game with how we defended them at the 3," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "They have a couple of players who can really shoot it. I thought we kind of took them out of that for a while. Here in the last two weeks we've really done a good job of taking strengths of the other team away from them."
Abby Selzer, a freshman from Thomas, Okla., provided OCU with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals in 17 minutes of action. Selzer shot 8-for-12 from the field.
Mallory Lockhart, a freshman from Keller, Texas, rang up 14 points with 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the 3-point line. Brennyn Seagler, a junior from Gruver, Texas, chipped in 14 points and six rebounds while hitting 4-of-9 on 3-pointers for OCU.
Michaela Kay, a senior from Spokane, Wash., picked up nine points, five assists and four steals for the Stars.
Selzer sparked the Stars with a 3-point play for a 9-6 lead at the 2:26 mark of the first quarter. Seagler nailed a pair of free throws, and NaShyla Hammons capped a 7-0 OCU run with a putback early in the second period.
OCU squares off against Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
