Stars look to continue success at NAIA Indoor Championships

BILLINGS S.D. – Oklahoma City University women's indoor track and field team aims for another strong finish in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning on Thursday at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
Competing for Oklahoma City will be Nikole Halladay-Meth, Sheridan Hoyer, Delaney Mayo, Aminat Olowora, Anysia Romain and Michaela Werner. The Stars will run in the the 60-meter, the 200-meter, the 800-meter, the 3,000-meter, the 5,000-meter race, distance medley relay and the mile.
Semifinal races will be held on Thursday and Friday, and finals will be held Saturday. For more information about the NAIA Indoor Championships, click here.
"We have had a few sick kids recently," OCU head coach Matt Aguero said. "I feel like all our athletes have a great shot of making it to the finals. The women come into this weekend ranked 23rd, but if we do what we know we can do I believe that we will finish higher than that."
This season, the Stars' relay team turned in a win and met the 'A' qualifying standard in the Missouri Southern Lion Open on Feb. 2 with a time of 12:28.19. OCU recorded the sixth best time in the NAIA in this event in 2018-19.
Hoyer and Olowoa are two time all-American, Mayo claimed all-American status with the teams sixth place finish in the relay race in last year with a time of 12:16.51.
Olowora, a senior from Lagos, Nigeria, has won the last two individual national title in the 3,000 meters with a final time of nine minutes and 33.96 seconds, just three seconds of the national record. She broke a school record in the process. She was also the runner-up in the mile. Breaking OCU's previous record she set a year before with a time of 4:45.85. Olowora is an 11-time all-American and nine time-time national champion in cross country and track & field. She has won the past two 3,000-meter titles in the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
This year, Olowora took home first place in the 3,000 meters at the Pittsburg State Invitational on Feb. 9 with a time of nine minutes, 42.44 seconds, 18.58 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and hit the "A" qualifying standard. She also notched first place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:54.5 in the Central Oklahoma Broncho Open on Feb. 10.
Halladay-Meth, a freshman from Odessa, Texas, provided OCU with a school record in the 60 meters with a time of 7.77, which qualified in 20th place. She also hit the "B" qualifying standard in the 200 meters.
In 2018, the Stars finished 10th place with 21 total points, Wayland Baptist (Texas) won the championship with 100 points. Oklahoma City's distance medley relay team placed sixth in the finals.
