Stars hold NAIA Southwest Qualifying Group

Qualifier starts with preliminaries at 1 p.m. Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University hosts the NAIA Southwest Qualifying Group Cheerleading/Dance Championships starting 1 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars will perform in the cheerleading preliminaries 2:10 p.m., while OCU will take the floor in the dance preliminaries 3:10 p.m. Saturday.
Each team will have the opportunity to perform twice with the cheer prelims happening 1 p.m. and dance prelims starting 2:50 p.m. The cheer finals will begin 4 p.m., while the dance finals start 5:40 p.m. Watch the qualifier live.
Teams are looking to qualify for the NAIA cheerleading & dance championships March 8-9 in Davenport, Iowa.
In 2018-19, the Stars' pom/dance team ranks second in the NAIA with an average score of 85.77. OCU produced its No. 1 score this season of 92.20 in the Sterling Invitational on Feb. 8 in Sterling, Kan. The Stars have turned in three scores of 90 or better this season.
Oklahoma City stands fourth in the NAIA with an average cheer score of 83.55. The Stars posted their top score of 85.93 in the Missouri Baptist Spartan Showcase on Jan. 18 in St. Louis. Twice OCU's score has exceeded 85 points in five performances this season.
OCU swept the top spots in both the cheer and dance standings in qualifiers two years in a row in 2016 and 2017. The Stars own NAIA cheer championships won in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and the 2014 NAIA dance titles. OCU finished as national runner-up in both the NAIA cheer & dance championships last March at Abe Lemons Arena.
