Stars hold edge in Houston Classic

Madden leads the pack after one round

HUMBLE, Texas – Jack Madden of Oklahoma City University turned in a top score after one round in the Houston Classic on Monday at the Golf Club of Houston.
Madden, a freshman from Dungannon, Northern Ireland, Ireland, notched a first-round score of 70 to lead the pack.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA men's golf, posted a team score of 293 on the par-72, 6,861-yard course to lead the field. Southern Nazarene is currently in second place with a team score of 304, while third-ranked Texas Wesleyan sits in third 14-strokes behind OCU with a team score of 307 after the first round.
Brandon Strathe, a sophomore from Owasso, Okla., posted a score of 71 to finish the first round in second place. Strathe is competing as an individual for the Stars and leads the field sinking five birdies on the day. Peri'Don Castille, a junior from Dallas, and Carson Seals, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., each finished tied for sixth on Monday, with a score of 74.
Ty Stites, a sophomore from Sallisaw, Okla., posted a 75 to end the day tied for 9th place. Sam Simonsen, a freshman from Plano, Texas, sits in a tie for 28th with an 81.
The tournament concludes with the end of round two and round three on Tuesday starting at 8:00 a.m. Round two was called due to darkness. OCU has three to four holes remaining in the round.
