OCU's Aguero, Kipkoros receive USTFCCCA honors

Coaches association awards Stars with coach and athlete of the year

NEW ORLEANS – Oklahoma City University's Matt Aguero was named the NAIA South Central regional men's cross country coach of the year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Aguero led the top-ranked Stars to the team title at the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships with 22 points. OCU also won the team title at the NAIA Mid-States Classic on Oct. 26 and finished sixth at the Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 5.
Aguero won the 2018 national championship in his third year with the Stars. He was an assistant coach when OCU won their previous two national titles. OCU has won men's cross country national championships in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018.
Oklahoma City has held the No. 1 ranking for two straight seasons in the NAIA polls. Before last season, the Stars were the last NAIA team to stay at No. 1 for an entire season back in 2014.
Aguero now owns four USTFCCCA NAIA South Central Region women's coach of the year nods and two men's coach of the year awards, four SAC women's coach of the year honors and three conference men's coach of the year accolades.
OCU's Oscar Kipkoros was named USTFCCCA South Central regional men's athlete of the year as voted on by coaches.
Kipkoros, a senior from Iten, Kenya, captured the SAC individual championship for the second year in a row. He crossed the finish line with a time of 24 minutes, 47.2 seconds to top his winning time from last year's conference meet.
In his senior season, Kipkoros also ran well at the Missouri Southern Stampede on Sept. 21 and the NAIA Mid-States Classic, where he finished runner-up both times.
Kipkoros became an SAC all-conference team member for the third time and picked up SAC runner of the week as well as the NAIA national runner of the week honor for Sept. 16-22. Six Stars became all-SAC with their top-15 finishes at the SAC Championships on Nov. 9.
OCU will look for similar success at the 2019 NAIA Championships on Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Wash.
