OCU builds second-round lead in Southern Plains Intercollegiate

Meyers stands four shots off pace

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University put together a 12-shot advantage after the first day of the Southern Plains Intercollegiate on Monday at Gaillardia Country Club.
The Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA men's golf, turned in a 295-291–586 on the par-72, 7,120-yard course. David Meyers of OCU trailed the individual leader by four strokes.
OCU stood in front of three ranked teams, including third-ranked defending national champion Texas Wesleyan, which shot a 303-295–598. Eighteenth-ranked Grand View (Iowa) held onto third place, while No. 13 Bellevue (Neb.) sat in fourth. Texas Wesleyan opened the season as the preseason No. 1-ranked team.
Meyers and Grand View's Parker Davidson posted the lowest scores among the field of players from NAIA teams. Davidson and Meyers tied with Oklahoma State's Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Dillon Stewart. Ferdinand Muller from Oklahoma State had the individual lead by three strokes over Riley Casey of Oklahoma.
Meyers, a senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, furnished OCU with a 71-70–141. Meyers sank nine birdies and led the tournament in scoring on par-3 holes.
Santiago Chamorro produced a 77-68–145 to tie for eighth place for the Stars. Chamorro, a freshman from Bogota, Colombia, drained eight birdies. Three OCU golfers were in the top 10 with Carson Seals standing in 10th. Seals, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., delivered a 73-74–147 while knocking in six birdies.
Peri'Don Castille contributed a 74-79–153, which tied him for 15th. Castille, a senior from Dallas, nailed six birdies. Quinton Tews had an 82-85–167.
Dylan Mullaney had the top score among the OCU golfers competing as individuals. Mullaney, a sophomore from Lapeer, Mich., carded an 82-73–155, good for 18th. Other Stars playing unattached were Sam Tarpley (94-90–184) and Carson Breckenridge (112-110–222).
The golfers braved unseasonably cold weather. Temperatures at the course Monday ranged between 40-45 degrees with a 15-20 mph wind.
The final round starts 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gaillardia Country Club.
