Additions to Stars Field coming

OKLAHOMA CITY – Additions and improvements to Oklahoma City University's soccer facilities continue to occur with a new ticket booth and scoreboard being installed at Stars Field this August to cap off another successful enhancement project.

The scoreboard will be dedicated this fall along with a ticket booth funded by Paul and Kim Sanders, who have also generously funded the ticket booths at Jim Wade Stadium and Abe Lemons Arena.

“Both of these facility enhancements add aesthetically to the facility,” OCU athletic director Jim Abbott said. “They will enhance the experience of fans and visiting fans, much like the addition of the press box last year.”

The scoreboard features not only the clock and score functionality, but also a tally of shots on goal by both teams playing in the match. “Neither project would be possible without our generous donors and sponsors,” Abbott said. “We are thankful for the generosity of Paul and Kim Sanders for the addition of the ticket booth and for all our sponsors that made the scoreboard possible.”

This scoreboard complements the multipurpose facilities additions that have been ongoing. Lights were added in 2006, and the latest enhancements debuted Oct. 17, 2009 against Oklahoma Christian. A press box, concession stand and restrooms were opened to enhance the field.

“It's very fitting that we did get a new scoreboard this year, along with other additions of the new concession stand, press box and ticket booth,” OCU coach Brian Harvey said. “It lends itself well to the soccer program and shows we are making strides.”

The work is not complete, however, as future projects include the much-needed addition of field dugouts and men's and women's locker rooms. Fundraising for these efforts is ongoing. Not only are these new enhancements adding to the environment, but also to the allure of OCU soccer.

“These projects help with recruiting,” Harvey said. “If these athletes are going to spend four years here they want to see that soccer is important to the university, and these new additions make Stars Field a place to be proud of.”

Abbott echoes these sentiments while recognizing the additions go well beyond the field and into the classroom.

“We have a great tradition of success in our soccer programs both on the field and in the classroom,” Abbott said. “The facility improvements that we've done are designed to continue that tradition for years to come.”

Dedication ceremonies for the scoreboard and ticket booth are still being planned and further information will be released when it becomes available. Please contact OCU athletics at (405) 208-5309 to become a part of the next round of improvements to Stars Field.
