OCU finishes second in SAC Cup standings

OCU captured the Sooner Athletic Conference men's golf championship for the 13th time in 14 years and 16th time overall.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University finished in second place in the race for the 2009-10 Sooner Athletic Conference Cup, which goes to the athletic department that excels the most within the conference.

Oklahoma Baptist took the award to snap OCU's seven-year streak of winning the award. This marks the second time in the cup's 11-year existence that OCU did not win it. Each school's best performance in six conference-affiliated sports were factored into the Stars' points total.

OCU captured conference championships in men's and women's golf and the conference co-championship in women's basketball. OCU also took the NAIA crown in men's golf and national runner-up finishes in women's golf and softball. OCU reached the NAIA women's basketball semifinals.

The Stars also captured SAC Tournament titles in women's basketball, baseball and softball in 2009-10.

In the SAC Cup standings, Oklahoma Baptist finished with 379 points, edging Oklahoma City at 375. Oklahoma City picked up the maximum 70 points in men's golf for winning the league title and the national championship. The Stars added 68 points in women's golf, 63 in softball and 61 in women's basketball.

Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Baptist had finished first and second, respectively, in the last seven SAC Cup standings. This is OBU's first SAC Cup.

SAC Cup points were determined by awarding 60 points for first, 55 for second, decreasing in increments of five down the regular-season standings. Ties were broken based on conference tournament seeding.

Additional bonus points are awarded for success in national postseason play. A team can earn 10 bonus points for its school by winning the national championship, eight for being national runner-up, six for making the semifinals or top four and three for making the quarterfinals or top eight.
